Introduction to FPS’s Prayer Strategies Discovery Bible Studies Set:

Prayer—or engagement with God—is integral to every aspect of the lives of the team members and the corporate team, as well as to the strategy and approach they use. Within this docu-ment, you will find the following: a definition and explanation to the Prayer strategy, a set of questions to help you diagnosis the status of your team’s use of this strategy, a Discovery Bible Story Set to help you understand Scripture’s view on this strategy, and links for further re-sources related to this Prayer strategy. We recommend completing the team’s diagnostic first then adapt the Discovery Story Set to meet your team’s needs. Feel free to use the typical DBS questions, however, in addition we’ve tried to suggest you ask these much deeper questions to elicit specifics regarding this strategy. The Fellowship of Prayer Strategists have a set of nine-teen di ﬀ erent prayer strategies. These are not intended to be the complete picture of this strat-egy but a glimpse at the use for this strategy. You can find more strategies at www.prayer–strategists.net. We hope these tools will prove helpful in considering ways you and your team can increase your capacity for extraordinary prayer for the sake of the King and His Kingdom.

Prayer Mobilization, Training, & Teamwork Definition: Sharpening our Prayers and Partnering in Prayer

Explanation: We learn to pray best by praying and prayer is more caught than taught. We want to hone our skills in being an advocate alongside Jesus Himself. But, prayer is not only an indi-vidual experience but we are called to join together before God’s Throne in adoration, confes-sion, thanksgiving, and supplication. Where two or three are together in His Name, He is in their midst. Jesus told us “…if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.” The Bible tells us that one can put 1,000 to flight but two can put 10,000 to flight—there is multiplied power in agreement. We are called to be His Body, His hands and feet on earth. Psalm 133 explains that the place of com-manded blessing is where brothers dwell together in unity. And, Jesus explained that the world would know He had sent us by the love we have for one another. Since prayer is the way we has ordained for us to exercise the authority He has entrusted to us, partnership in prayer is essential in seeing His kingdom coming and His will being done on earth as in heaven.

Diagnostic Questions for You & Your Team:

1. Do you invite others to join in praying with and for you and for God’s assignments: In a prayer triplet? In your PIT Crew (personal intercessory team)? Through a general prayer team? In a regional, focus group, or strategy field team? (Build webs of relationships)

2. Are you cultivating those relationships as treasured ministry partners? Do you regularly communicate with them to share praise, prayer updates and obstacles you face for their prayer? (Build in feedback loops) 3. Are you regularly being mentored by more experienced believers in prayer and prayer strategy? (Learn ‘hands up’) 4. Are you multiplying yourself by discipling other prayer strategists? (Coach and mentor ‘hands down’) 5. Are you growing in your partnering facilitation skills and applying those in building prayer for the unreached?

Discovery Bible Story Set: 1. “Teach Us to Pray” – Luke 11:1-13 A. Pray as a group before beginning that God would speak to us and open our hearts to hear Him. B. Read the entire passage aloud at least 2 times or listen to an audio version twice through. If your group uses storying, present the scripture in this way. Then, have the group practice re-telling the story together. C. Perspective: Jesus’ prayer life must have impressed the disciples because we find them asking Him to teach them how to pray. See how He instructed them. D. Discussion questions: • What do you like about the story? What is di ﬃ cult or what don’t you like? • What do you learn about people from this story? What do you learn about God? • In each phrase, what aspect of God do we see revealed? What corresponding role do we see that we serve in each phrase? • What qualities did Paul and his companions exhibit during these interactions? • What instruction could you derive in thinking about prayer from this? D. Take a few minutes to quietly listen to God. What is He instructing you to do from what you’re hearing? Share with each other what you’re sensing. Are some of His instruc-tions quite di ﬀ erent than you might have imagined? How? E. Who is God asking you to share this story with? When will you do it? Share with the group. F. What key principles about prayer can you draw from this passage?

2. “Mobilizing Prayer” – 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5 A. Pray before beginning that God would speak to us and open our hearts to hear Him. B. Read the entire passage completely through. C. Discussion questions: • What do you like about the story? What is di ﬃ cult or what don’t you like? • What do you learn about people from this story? What do you learn about God? • How does Paul request prayer from his supporters? D. Take a few minutes to quietly listen to God. What is He instructing you to do from what you’re hearing? Share with each other what you’re sensing. Are some of His instruc-tions quite di ﬀ erent than you might have imagined? How? E. Who is God asking you to share this story with? When will you do it? Share with the group. F. What key principles about prayer can you draw from this passage?

3. “Agree in Prayer” – Matthew 18:15-20 A. Pray before beginning that God would speak to us and open our hearts to hear Him. B. Read the entire passage completely through.

C. Discussion questions: • What do you like about the story? What is di ﬃ cult or what don’t you like? • What do you learn about people from this story? What do you learn about God? • Why might it be important that two or three or more join to pray together? D. Take a few minutes to quietly listen to God. What is He instructing you to do from what you’re hearing? Share with each other what you’re sensing. Are some of His instruc-tions quite di ﬀ erent than you might have imagined? How?

4. “Hearing Together” – Acts 13:1-3 A. Pray before beginning that God would speak to us and open our hearts to hear Him. B. Read the entire passage completely through. C. Discussion questions: • What do you like about the story? What is di ﬃ cult or what don’t you like? • What do you learn about people from this story? What do you learn about God? • Why might it be important that two or more worship, pray and listen together to God? D. Take a few minutes to quietly listen to God. What is He instructing you to do from what you’re hearing? Share with each other what you’re sensing. Are some of His instruc-tions quite di ﬀ erent than you might have imagined? How? E. Who is God asking you to share this story with? When will you do it? Share with the group. F. What key principles about prayer can you draw from this passage?

Further Scriptures • Jesus with Peter, James & John: Mark 5:35-43; Matt. 17:1-8; Matt. 26:36-44 Compare these situations with the idea of a prayer triplet. All these instances, Jesus took Peter, James and John with Him. The situations all involved death. In the first, Jesus demonstrated His power over death. In the second, Jesus is shown as greater than Moses. And, in the last, Je-sus models putting His own will aside in obedience to the Father’s will. • Jesus and His 12 disciples: Luke 6:12-16 Consider the process Jesus observed in select-ing the twelve He would call to be with Him. • Joshua, Moses, Aaron & Hur in the battle against the Amalekites: Exodus 17 This could easily be compared to an onsite prayer team, prayer triplet, and prayer team in general.
