  • Does Prayer Make a Difference?

    DoesPrayerMakeADiffImage01Does prayer make a difference?

    There was an experiment conducted several years ago by a church in Phoenix, AZ. Intercessors randomly selected 160 names from a local phone book. They divided the names into two groups–and prayed regularly for one of the groups, i.e., for 80 homes. The other 80 homes were not
    prayed for. After 90 days they called all the homes offering to stop by and pray for the family.

    Of the 80 homes they didn’t pray for, only one person invited them to come in. Of the 80 homes that were prayed for, 69 invited someone to come over and 45 invited someone into their home. (Doug Kamstra, The Praying Church Idea Book)

    Prayer makes a difference!

    We have friends in India who conducted a similar experiment. They picked two villages. One of the villages they prayed for and the other they did not. When they later went in to proclaim the good news of Jesus, the
    village they had not prayed for threw them out. In the other village, the one they had prayed for, 45 families became believers.

    In the story of how we started a church in the low-income housing projects, the first thing we did was to pray. In the next post, I’ll talk some more about prayer walking. Have any of you ever seen something similar?

  • GPD’s Partnership with Ethne To Ethne – Prayer Case Study

    GPD’s Partnership With Ethnê To Ethnê

    “Month-to-month, region-by-region… Prayer changes things!”

    Testimony:

    Global Prayer Digest (GPD) has been partnering with the Ethnê movement’s prayer initiative since 2006, paralleling their issues with the more general cyclical focus month-by-month and region-by-region. It was estimated that altogether 3-4 million believers around the world are praying along with the overall initiative, including probably more than 100,000 through the Global Prayer Digest tool, published in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. As the prayer working group spread the word globally, and as more and more field teams caught wind of the opportunity and began to synchronize their efforts with these massive global outpourings of prayer, more and more breakthroughs emerged, closely timed to the month of prayer focus.

    Prayer is meant to be linked with strategic field efforts. Why is prayer coordinated with field efforts so important? By systematically focusing on the peoples of a region, month by month field workers can be especially bold, press forward with new initiatives, or see new fruit from established efforts among these groups during this outpouring of intercession before God’s throne for the peoples of their region. The testimonies so far have been amazing!

    Ethnê’s work has been enhanced by having partnerships with Joshua Project, Global Prayer Digest, PrayerGuard, and Etnopedia as well as many others.

    Reported Breakthroughs:

    Early in the effort, August was the month of prayer for least-reached peoples of Northeast Asia; the issue that year focused the last several days of people groups of Mongolia. A mission pastor who routinely led short term teams here again was on the ground in an outlying “aimag” or provincial capital city to do outreach, except that this time the group found that rather than handfuls of response, hundreds of people were responding to the claims of Jesus Christ. His email to me said, “It’s like fish jumping in the boat! I’ve never seen such response here in all our previous trips!”

    One month we focused on what is often called the most unreached island in the world. This particular location is the home of 49 unreached people groups of over 25 million people. It was estimated there were only 5,000 followers of Christ! When the people groups there begin to turn to Christ, they could be instrumental in carrying Jesus throughout the rest of Indonesia and throughout their region.

    Workers have labored among these groups for some time with little fruit. However, as the Ethnê movement has grown, several working group facilitators began to consider what could be done to intentionally apply what we were learning together towards catalyzing movements to Christ among these 49 people groups.

    In January 2010 a small group of about 20 people were continuing this discussion, just as the deadline was approaching for GPD’s June 2010 issue. GPD agreed to shift their theme to the 49 unreached peoples of this island for June 2010, partnering with the field personnel who agreed to partner and see what God might do in answer to these millions of prayers with their feet on the ground.

    Within a month of the release of the June 2010 GPD issue, the evidence was clear: several people groups that previously had had no believers had seen new believers come to faith and begin sharing their faith with others. Indications of small movements to Christ were beginning and growing. For example, one couple involved with field ministry here know a national believer who saw the first Muslim background believer among an UPG in the island come to Christ. By the end of the year there were 350 baptized believers meeting in 20 house churches that had reproduced to the 3rd generation. The practical synergy of this paralleling of extraordinary global prayer with diligent field efforts joining hands brought clear breakthroughs!

    Peoples of Cambodia were highlighted during July 2011 in the GPD. Before that time there was so little fruit among Han Chinese UPGs that one missionary team was ready to give up. (In the GPD we prayed for Han Chinese people groups in Cambodia every day from July 25-30). By the end of that year, however, they had baptized eight new Han Chinese believers, and their work continues. According to our field partner, this could be directly attributed to the additional prayer boost. He noted, however, that as the year wore on, they were seeing a closing of that window of opportunity once again. They were encouraging workers in other places to make the most of the opening, knowing that it might well be a brief period.

    Recently, I received a further encouragement that our prayers are making an impact. GPD’s November 2012 featured unreached peoples of Central Asia without scriptures; our prayers focused on the need for the Word of God among all peoples in their heart languages. One of the Central Asian unreached people groups one particular organization has worked among for more than two decades is suddenly demonstrating an unprecedented interest in God’s Word!  In the past 13 weeks, more people have accessed and received scripture portions and interacted with the message of the Good News than has been possible in the last 10 years of combined scripture distribution! This amazing “miracle” has opened doors to “first ever” conversations and inquiries and people hearing about our Savior. You could say that this is the single greatest opportunity in recent history to reach these people with the Good News!

    Over the years a significant barrier has been getting God’s Word into the hands of this populous but widely spread out and remote people. Scripture portions have been hand distributed, leaving the vast majority out of reach of the good news. For years many have prayed for God to break through the barriers so that these millions of people could hear the gospel and read it in their own heart language. Then, earlier this year, in an unexpected way that caught everyone by surprise, these Central Asians started showing up on the Internet on a scripture site—but one in a different language.

    What could be done to help them find His Word in their own tongue? A link was created and a fresh website was designed in their own language, that drew viewers in with biblical answers to questions about everything from marriage and family life, to getting along with neighbors, money and wealth, and God’s character. On each page is an opportunity to read related scripture passages, and at every step of the website is the option to print portions or even download the whole Bible (what is currently translated) or listen to audio files. Visitors to this website may post a question or comment which is passed on to our growing ‘response team’. And many are writing in – some with earnest questions and requests, while others with hostile comments. In a way only God could arrange, this single Internet site has made it possible for thousands of people to read and/or download the good news in the last three months!

    On April 16, 2010, GPD intercessors prayed for Persians in Berlin, Germany. We prayed that “God will reveal Himself to the Iranians, and that they will realize that following Jesus is not part of a religious or political system…” Here is an answer to prayer from that day. According to a recent report, “It all started when a few Iranians showed up for service at a church on Sunday in 2013. We thought at the beginning it would only be a few. It is now well over 300, and they are all converts from Islam!”

    In December of 2012, GPD readers focused their prayers on the UPGs of Algeria. Here is an excerpt from an April 4, 2014 edition of Charisma Magazine. http://www.charismanews.com/world/43406-revival-breaks-out-in-land-once-hostile-to-christianity

    “From the shores of Casablanca in Morocco to Tripoli, Libya, experts say the growth of Christianity, especially in the last 20 years, has been unprecedented. And now that growth is also evident in the North African nation of Algeria.

    “Pastor Salah leads one of the largest churches in Algeria. Some 1,200 believers attend the church, and 99 percent of the population is Muslim. “In fact we never thought the Algerian church would grow so big” says Salah. He says every new Christian in his church came from a Muslim background. Since the church opened, they have baptized on average 150-160 believers per year.…Others, like Farhat who is also a former Muslim, speak of miraculous encounters. He says he was illiterate and couldn’t read the Bible when he accepted the Lord, then God made a change, “Since then I’ve read the Bible and understood the Word of God. This is just an example of what God has done in my life and this is the case of many people here in Algeria.”…

    … Qurahmane [an Algerian church leader] is seeing God open unprecedented doors, “God has given to us many opportunities to witness at the police stations, at the courts, and in fact one time I went to the police station and they gave me 45 minutes to speak about Jesus! Just imagine yourself, they are all Muslims sitting and telling me, ‘Tell us about Jesus!’ ”

    In March of 2013, GPD readers prayed for UPGs in Moscow, Russia, including one entry about Russian Jews, and another on Ukrainian Jews. In May of 2014, I received a report from Jews for Jesus that indicates that our prayers were answered. “Last year’s Moscow campaign was one of the most fruitful of all the 2013 Jews for Jesus outreaches worldwide. In just 11 days, the team of 25 (staff and volunteers) handed out over a quarter million tracts. Over 900 people asked for follow-up. Thirty-eight Jewish people and 33 non- Jews gave their hearts to the Lord.”

    In July of 2004, we were praying for unreached and unengaged people groups of China. That month we prayed for the Buddhist Baima people to “learn of Jesus Christ…” That same month a short-term mission team went to them, and some of them not only learned about Jesus, but they embraced Him as Lord! Was this a coincidence?

    Encouragement from the recent April 2014 issue on global cities and unreached peoples from Dubai: One of the field workers there had planned to send out extra evangelism teams looking for people of peace during the GPD’s day of prayer for Dubai, April 14, 2014. He reported that they had sent out short-term teams to make what are called shema statements–simply a way of talking that lets folks know that they are spiritual people and helps to identify people who are seeking truth (people of peace). Their team ran across several Muslim background folks who were not only seeking but insisting on committing their lives to become followers of Christ immediately! They had gone to a hospital and the first fellow saw open vision of Jesus and was healed in his shoulder. The next fellow also saw an open vision of Jesus and felt fire all over his body. God responds to our prayers in very amazing ways!

    December 2014 we partnered with the NAME Ephesus Team to prepare the issue focused on “Rending the Shroud” over the Arab world. God had orchestrated the completion of a special prayer assignment in the Delta region of Egypt completing an assignment over the entire continent of Africa to coincide with the 3 days of prayer for this region’s peoples. It’s early yet, but already workers have reported a sense of a heavy blanket being removed from their areas and much more spiritual openness and freedom to share the gospel.

  • Crimean Tatars – Prayer Case Study

    Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine and Prayer

    Sas Conradie, Global Generosity Network

    “Preventing War Through Prayer…”

    CrimeanTartarsCaseStudyImage01

    Testimony:

    It reminded me about what we did in May 1999 in Crimea (then part of Ukraine). At that point there were about 10 Crimean Tatar Christians while church planting in general was very difficult. God then showed us that the spiritual blockage in Crimea was the deportation of the Crimean Tatars on 18 May 1944 in which about 50% of Crimean Tatars died. So we organized a number of events that Bennie Mostert among others suggested:

    1) International focused prayer for the Crimean Tatars on 18 May 1999;

    2) An international prayer group that traveled with Crimean Tatar and Crimean (Russian, Ukrainian, etc) in a bus to the different corners of the peninsula. This group cleansed the land through acts of repentance celebrated with communion and then claimed the land for God’s Kingdom by planting stakes in the ground; with different scripture verses as prophetic messages. The final stake was planted at 5am on 18 May 1999 at the exact time when and point from where the Crimean Tatars were deported;

    3) Identificational repentance between Crimean Tatar and Russian Christians the evening of 17 May;

    4) A Crimean Tatar partnership meeting on 19 May to discuss collaboration between churches and ministries to spiritually take the land and reach the Crimean Tatars.

    The Results Were Quite Remarkable:

    CrimeanTartarsCaseStudyImage02

    1) There was no violence on 18 May 1999 despite everybody expecting war to break out in Crimea. The Crimean Tatar news agency could not understand that in a later article. What is more significant is that we think that Russia intended to occupy Crimea during that week. A friend of mine discovered that Russian special forces were ready to intervene when as they expected violence would break out. For one or another reason they were prevented from doing that;

    2) The social and political situation in Crimea changed dramatically. The grievances of the Crimean Tatars had been finally addressed and for 15 years there was peace and economic growth until the occupation of Crimea last year. Even that was remarkable that only 2 soldiers died. If the Ukrainian soldiers and especially the Ukrainian navy would have tried to break out with force, a global war might have been ignited last year in April in Crimea;

    3) Within the space of a 4-5 years the number of Crimean Tatar believers increased to be between 100 and 150;

    4) Planting Russian and Ukrainian churches became much easier. In the 5 years after the prayer events, just one church planted 3 new churches. That after they struggled in the years before;

    5) A few months after the prayer events when that devastating earthquake struck Turkey, a prophet in a church got a vision that satan wanted to destroy Crimea as well but that there was a tent covering Crimea that prevented him from doing that. One of the leaders of the prayer campaign was in the church when the prophet said that. He told him that he could take him to the stakes that keep the tent in place!

    This was for me the most remarkable event in my ministry and life. In 2004 we had a year of prayer in Sussex, our region here in England. I suggested that we do something similar in Sussex because of things that happened between the Catholics and Protestants in Sussex in 1704 which is commemorated with bonfire processions every year. I have no doubt that cleansing of Sussex is needed! Unfortunately the leaders were not very keen to do that and to a large extent the year of prayer fell flat. And we did not see the spiritual breakthroughs that we had hoped for. It seems as if the intercessory preparation, cleansing, claiming and taking of the land should be one journey. Too often there is a disconnect between intercession, repentance, prophetic, and apostolic entrance.

    I believe people are quite reluctant to deal with the spiritual blockages in their communities. I’ve seen it in our town in England. People want revival but they do not want to admit, repent and remove the blockages.

    On the issue of Ukraine:

    1) As you might remember we mobilised prayer for Ukraine in general and Crimea in particular in April in 2014 when what we now know were Russian soldiers blockaded Ukrainian forces in Crimea. I heard that a world war might have easily broken out if Ukrainian soldiers would have tried to violently break through. In the end only one soldier died because of the restraint by the Ukrainians. It could be that God answered our prayers during that week and prevented a war from breaking out.

    2) I read a quite disturbing article on atrocities committed by Ukrainian and Polish nationalists during WWII (seehttp://www.kyivpost.com/article/opinion/op-ed/volodymyr-viatrovych-real-and-fictional-history-in-ukraines-archives-413382.html). That also involves Jews. What I did not know is that apparently Jewish Bolsheviks supervised the famine in Ukraine that killed millions of people in 1932-1933 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor). I am wondering whether some spiritual cleansing might be needed.

    3) There are concerns about the Russian government encouraging a new religious cult (http://www.kyivpost.com/article/opinion/op-ed/alexei-bayer-the-victory-cult-413353.html) that even includes the Russian Orthodox Church. I think this is something Christians need to pray about.

    4) On the issue of the atrocities during WWII, Czech church leaders told me that the toughest spiritual areas in the Czech Republic (the most atheistic country in the world if I am not mistaken) are the border regions with Germany. That is the old Sudetenland that was settled by Germans for centuries but who then had to flee when the Red Army moved in at the end of the war. Some spiritual cleansing might be needed in these areas as well.

    Greetings.

  • Prayer Changes Things!

    FPSPrayerChangesThingsImage01

    EXTRAORDINARY PRAYER + STRATEGIC FIELD OUTREACH = ABUNDANT FRUIT

    “It’s like fish jumping in the boat!”

    FPSPrayerChangesThingsImage02

    In August 2005, without the group intentionally realizing they were paralleling their efforts with the new Ethnê movement’s prayer initiative, a small missions team from Virginia stumbled into this incredible fruitfulness in one of the aimags [provinces] of Mongolia. This small mission team made their usual trip to Mongolia, primarily to do medical outreach, happening to visit during the month of prayer for the unreached peoples of Mongolia that year. I got an email from the leader of the group exclaiming, “It’s like fish jumping in the boat! We’ve never had such response ever before! We’ve had handfuls, but God is giving us hundreds of people responding! It’s incredible!”

    What precipitated such a harvest?

    During the planning meetings leading up to the Ethnê06 meetings in Bali, a working group began coalescing to focus on prayer as it related to the Forgotten Fourth World, (the 6,700+ least-reached people groups around the world). Participants recognized the tremendous quantity of prayer that had already been raised prior to 2004 through the efforts of AD2000 & Beyond Movement and many other movements, organizations, churches and individuals. We considered the question, “What needed to be done to build on the momentum that already existed?” Some of the earlier efforts had done a great job of raising awareness of the need for prayer,  the existence of unreached people groups, and also the incredible effect that on-site prayer could have in breaking strongholds standing in the way of these groups being reached. However, we felt that some public information leaned toward statistics and generalities—it was rather dry. There was a need to try to “put a face” on the unreached people groups in order to inspire fresh energy in prayer for these groups.

    FPSPrayerChangesThingsImage03

    Inspiring 3.5 million to pray!

    Recognizing the great power in the stories of how we meet Jesus, we began to collect and produce a set of 12 testimony videos, one from each of the 12 Ethnê regions—testimonies of people from some of the unreached people groups who had come to Christ and now were leading others to faith in Him. One of the first tangible outcomes was the incredible Ethnê two-DVD set completed in December 2006. Thousands of these have now circulated around the world. Each video includes five specific points for prayer for the least-reached groups of that region and is tied to the Ethnê Harvest-Linked Prayer Strategy (HeLPS) initiatives’ monthly prayer focus. The Ethnê  HeLPS initiative worked in partnership with individuals, churches, agencies and networks around the world to mobilize an estimated 3.5 million praying with this effort beginning each year following the Global Day of Prayer on Pentecost. Then, a systematic cycle of massive global prayer has been unleashed over the Forgotten Fourth World in each region. This begins in June every year with prayer for the least-reached peoples of the South Pacific and Southeast Asia and moves east to west, to Northeast Asia’s people groups in July, and so on.

    FPSPrayerChangesThingsImage04

    100,000 Using Global Prayer Digest to Pray –

    Global Prayer Digest [GPD] has been partnering with the Ethnê movement’s prayer initiative since 2005, paralleling their issues with the cyclical focus. It was estimated that among those praying along with the overall initiative, more than 100,000 join along through the Global Prayer Digest tool, published in English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean in hard copy, text email and web. As the prayer working group spread the word globally, and as more and more field teams caught wind of the opportunity and began to synchronize their efforts with these massive global outpourings of prayer, more and more breakthroughs emerged, many of them closely-timed to the month of the prayer focus.

    Why is prayer coordinated with field efforts so important?

    The idea, though, is more than simply mobilizing massive amounts of prayer for these unreached groups. Prayer is meant to be linked with strategic field efforts. Why is prayer coordinated with field efforts so important? By systematically focusing on the peoples of a region month by month, security concerns can be avoided yet field workers can be especially bold, press forward with new initiatives, or see new fruit from established efforts among these groups during this outpouring of intercession before God’s Throne for the peoples of their region. We believe God is hearing and answering; field workers are actively conserving the harvest resulting from their efforts and the prayer outpouring. The testimonies so far have been amazing! For example, following an issue in June 2009 new believers emerged among several Mekong people groups where no believers previously were present. As more and more joined hands, excitement grew and faith in what God might do as we asked Him expectantly grew as well.

    Join the Monthly Prayer Movement!

    You can contribute to this breakthrough by praying along and inviting others to do so as well. Following is the cyclical rotation for Ethnê’s Harvest-Linked Prayer Strategy (HeLPS) Initiative:

    January UPGs of Eastern & Southern Africa July UPGs of Northeast Asia
    February UPGs of Western & Central Africa August Buddhist UPGs of South Asia
    March UPGs of Eastern Europe & Eurasia September Hindu UPGs of South Asia
    April UPGs of Western Europe October Muslim UPGs of South Asia

  • How Can We Pray for the Least-Reached?

    “Look at the nations and watch – and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.”  — Habakkuk 1:5

    What is the problem?

    2,000 years ago Jesus commanded His disciples, “Go make disciples of all ‘nations’.” More than 6,800 of the 16,000 “ethnê” or ethnic groups living today, to which He referred, lack a community of believers with adequate numbers and resources to successfully fulfil His command. Simply stated, 1 in 4 people remain without reasonable access to the gospel—The Forgotten One Fourth World! This simply means that, although there may be a few believers or even a few churches, they are a people group among which there is no indigenous community of believing Christians with adequate numbers and resources to evangelize their own people group.

    Where are they?

    These groups are found around the world, not only in the so-called 10/40 Window nations. Go to this link legacy.joshuaproject.net to find the least-reached people groups in each nation.

    WHY ARE THEY STILL LEAST-REACHED?

    • GEOGRAPHIC BARRIERS: remote, harsh climate, difficult access, or nomadic.
    • LINGUISTIC BARRIERS: illiterate, no scripture in their language, unwritten language, terminology confusion.
    • POLITICAL BARRIERS: restricted access, evangelism forbidden, hostile environment (war?).
    • CULTURAL BARRIERS: persecution, closed to change, Christianity viewed as a “foreign” religion.
    • UNRECOGNIZED: believers unaware of the need or the group, small in size, prejudice, isolated from the society in which they live.

    SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO CHANGE THIS?

    Jesus told His disciples in Luke 10:1-3, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”   Jesus’ solution to the dilemma of the plentiful harvest with few workers was prayer.   In her book, Intercession, Thrilling and Fulfilling, Joy Dawson echoed this call to prayer, “God’s priority plan to reach the un-evangelized is the mobilization of His people in united prayer. We are to pray with clean hearts, according to His will and His ways from His Word, in faith, energized by the Holy Spirit.” Why pray? Is God listening? How can we do it? Find out more with this animation from the 24-7 Prayer movement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVHUx_EJnUs

    The Bible tells us prayer changes things! Prayer…

    • Ushers us into God’s presence which changes us.
    • Reveals God’s plans so we can cooperate with them.
    • Obeys Jesus’ command to ask the Lord of the Harvest to send workers.
    • Invites God’s presence and participation in the process.
    • Removes hindrances to the gospel and prepares the hearts of unbelievers to hear and respond.
    • Releases resources for the task.
    • Insures protection for the workers and the work.
    • Releases spiritual power to fulfill the call, and,
    • Exercises divine authority to change situations and people.
    • Prayer IS the battle, and prayer maintains the victory.

    How can we pray effectively? Begin with these five simple prayers based on scripture:

    1. SEE: Pray that believers will see the hearts among every least-reached people group that are ready to hear and respond to the Gospel (John 4:35).
    2. SEND: Pray that the Lord of the Harvest will send laborers among these “no-choice” peoples (Luke 10:2).
    3. UNITY: Pray that the Lord will help the Body of Christ to labor together in the unity of the Spirit to bring good news where it’s never been heard before (1 Cor. 3:9).
    4. SUPPLY: Pray that God will supply and multiply the resources necessary to support His workers and their work (2 Cor. 9:8-11).
    5. SUCCESS: Pray for 100-fold fruit that remains for God’s glory, transforming each group (Matt. 4:20).

    From the rising of the sun to its going down, the Name of the Lord is to be praised. The effective, fervent prayers of a righteous man avail much! Join hands with God and believers around the world month by month moving from east to west in this Harvest-Linked Prayer Strategy (HeLPS), peoples joining together to glorify God among all peoples…Ethne to Ethne…Pass it on…in your own network…in your own language.
